Quote1

Try to remember I'm a werecoyote that murdered her own family.
I won't judge. I promise.

Quote2
Malia Hale

Malia spent nine years living in the woods around Beacon Hills, completely unaware of her connection to the Hale family. However, as events unfolded -- whether the restoration of Hale House or the possible increased activity of a former alpha -- Malia sensed something was up and began making more regular incursions into populated areas. All that wandering around people resulted in something she didn't expect: she's back on two legs again. She's trying to adjust, but life was so much simpler when she was living in the woods.

Personality[]

Malia is what one might call 'rough around the edges' if they wanted to be polite. When she talks, she doesn't censor herself and doesn't seem to understand that this sort of behavior can offend people. Besides, as far as she can tell, she's just calling things what they are. Even when it's explained to her, she figures being offended isn't as bad as being dead and out in the woods you really didn't have time to pick over nuance, you just acted. As such, Malia is inclined to make quick judgments about people and situations and act on them accordingly. This is not to say she doesn't adapt, she's just more inclined to figure it out on the fly than to hold back and overthink it.

Malia doesn't subscribe to traditional definitions of right and wrong. Instead, she thinks more in terms of survival and loyalty. Derek has given her back something she thought she destroyed: a family and one she doesn't have to hide from. They are her anchor and she'll be damned if anyone is going to take that from her again. As such, she's fiercely protective, almost to the point of being territorial. She's also willing to follow their lead when it comes to what is "right" and what is 'wrong.' They clearly know more than her when it comes to this "being human" thing anyway.

Until early 2017, Malia was running around as a coyote. During that time, while she was still a thinking person on the inside, that didn't really come across in any significant way. The one exception being that her eyes lit up a brilliant shade of blue. This certainly didn't happen all the time, but it was a sure sign to those with a knowledge of the supernatural that she was not an ordinary coyote.

SKILLS[]

ACADEMICS[]

Novice

Malia is not and will never be an amazing student. However, she has managed to pass the GED and has a basic understanding of most subjects.

ATHLETICS[]

Competent

It took her awhile, but Malia is finally as comfortable with her two-legged body as her four-legged one, allowing her to hone her natural athletic ability. Malia has focused on learning from the local werecat and this has resulted in her picking up parkour with some gymnastics thrown in for good measure.

COMBAT[]

Competent

Malia was never thrilled about academics, but she has been and continues to be an enthusiastic student of combat. She's thrown herself into learning various fighting techniques and has picked them up like a natural. She spends a lot of her free time training and practicing, focusing primarily on hand-to-hand and utilizing her natural weapons. She still favors strength, but she now has the knowledge and skill to employ finesse as well.

SURVIVALISM[]

Expert

Malia has survived for nine years living alone in the woods. Granted, she has been a coyote, but this doesn't mean her tracking and hunting skills won't roll over when she starts walking around on two legs again. If anything, Malia is more at home in the wild than in any sort of developed area and can survive on her own with little to no equipment for extended periods of time.

POWERS[]

AGILITY[]

Enhanced

Thanks to being a werecoyote, Malia's agility is far greater than both the average coyote or human. She's had a bit of experience dodging projectiles, but now that she has thumbs again she should be able to manage that cool arrow catch everyone seems to be able to do.

COYOTE FORM[]

Enhanced

Thanks to having some one-on-one time with her future self, Malia can once again shift fully into a coyote whenever she chooses. In this form she possesses all of her other powers.

DOMINATION[]

Enhanced

While not as naturally intimidating as her werewolf counterparts, Malia is still able to dominate or frighten away most other animals. Malia has not yet had the chance to dominate humans, but the same principle should apply whether you growl at something with two or four legs.

NATURAL WEAPONS[]

Enhanced

Malia is no stranger to using her fangs and claws. While her experience has predominantly been using such tools on her prey, she would be able to tear through denser substances if the need arose.

PAIN TRANSFER[]

Enhanced

Like a werewolf, Malia can alleviate the pain of someone else by transferring it onto themselves. This requires physical contact and significant focus, becoming more difficult depending on the severity of the pain.

SENSES[]

Enhanced

Malia's senses are leaps and bounds beyond a human's and even keener than that of a normal coyote. Her sense of hearing allows her to pick up sounds at a greater distance. While not as acute as a werewolf's, her sense of smell allows her to track people and prey with ease and she can pick up some nuances from the scents. Her most enhanced sense is her eyesight and she enjoys impeccable night vision and the ability to pick out fine details; it's one of the reasons she has avoided coyote traps for so many years.

STRENGTH[]

Enhanced

While certainly not as strong as an alpha, Malia does possess enhanced strength. In her coyote form, this mostly led to her being able to take down larger prey than is strictly normal for a lone coyote. Since the wolves of Beacon Hills tend to run around on two legs, Malia enjoyed being the dominant predator in the woods surrounding the town thanks in large part to her enhanced strength.

Now that Malia is running around on two legs, she's finding new ways to test her strength by bending metal bars and smashing through non-armored targets. Thicker walls are taking more effort, but are still usually manageable.

TOUGHNESS[]

Enhanced

Malia is able to work through non-lethal injuries with a minimal loss of ability and heals at a greatly accelerated rate.

ADVANTAGES[]

ANIMAL COMMUNICATION[]

Animals, generally speaking, do not use words in the way humans think of them. Instead, it's all in the body language, various gestures, and of course pheromones. Malia is skilled in this type of communication, having picked it up as a second language of sorts during her time in the woods. So, while she cannot actually read the mind of animals, she is skilled at reading their intent and can communicate with them on a very basic level using various sounds and postures.

ANIMAL COMPANION[]

Now, there is this idea that a lot of predators don't get along with one another and, sure, that's true most of the time for most species. However, some species just seem to click, and coyotes and badgers are one of those. Nine-year-old Malia had no idea what she was doing and would have likely starved if it hadn't been for the intervention of a badger. He taught her how to dig up small rodents, and by watching him she learned some basic hunting skills. Malia continued her friendship with the badger, thinking of him as a cranky teddy bear, so she calls him Ted. Ted now bunks with her during winter, and their long-standing friendship means he is well disposed towards her. Granted, neither of them can talk to one another like humans, but they communicate like animals and have an understanding.

AREA KNOWLEDGE[]

Malia has spent years roaming the woods in and around Beacon Hills and as such is intimately familiar with all manner of trails, be they man-made such as a hiking path, or natural, like the routes other animals use to and from sources of water. When food has been scarce in winter, she has even ventured into town to scavenge and knows her way around the back alleys and sidestreets.

HALE FAMILY[]

Malia is a member of the Hale family, a family with a long history and reputation in and around Beacon Hills. That affords her a certain notoriety in the supernatural world. She also has access to Hale House and the family funds when she needs them.

WEAKNESSES[]

AWKWARD[]

Having spent the last nine years as a coyote, Malia lacks a lot of the normal social skills of her similarly aged peers. Whenever she gets the chance to interact with someone other than her badger friend, she will be blunt, possibly to the point of rudeness. Social subtleties and nuance will be lost on her and she will need to have a lot of things explained to her, like you can't just go around punching or growling at people you don't like.

DAMAGED[]

Malia killed her adoptive mother and sister. Sure, they got into a car crash because her biological mother was trying to shoot them, but Malia doesn't remember that. She only remembers arguing with her mom before the crash, the car tumbling into the ravine, her shifting, and then killing her family. She fully believes she caused the car crash and is solely responsible for their deaths. When she starts walking around on two legs again, she is going to have an incredibly difficult time connecting with other people and frankly, won't be inclined to try. Feelings get you or those you care about killed, so it is easier and safer not to connect. Malia will not be a beacon of compassion or understanding, instead she'll be more inclined to act out of a place of anger and pain.

HALE LEGACY[]

Being the daughter of Peter Hale is not an easy thing to live with. Peter made a number of enemies during his reign as an alpha, couple that with his general tendency to backstab people and well, Malia could inherit a lot of her father's enemies once they learn who she really is.

LOYALTY[]

Maybe it was all the time she spent alone -- well, alone save for Ted, but he was never much of a conversationalist. Regardless, she didn't know how much she missed belonging to something, to someone, until she had it again. Now she will do anything to protect Derek. Sure, he might not need it given that he's a hardy werewolf, but that doesn't stop Malia from having the instinct. Her willingness to go to extremes and her general lack of knowledge about human social norms put her in a precarious place since someone with the right knowledge could exploit Malia's loyalty quite easily.

WERECOYOTE WEAKNESSES[]

As a were, she shares a lot of the same weaknesses as werewolves like losing control during the full moon, electrical currents messing with her ability to shift and heal, inability to cross mountain ash, and a potentially deadly reaction to wolfsbane. Despite not being a werewolf, Malia is still susceptible to an alpha's roar.

Malia remembers being human and what it was like to be a part of a family. In fact, up until she was nine her life was unremarkably normal; she had two parents, Henry and Evelyn, a younger sister, Kiley, and was happy the way you can only be before you realize how messed up a place the world is. Malia grew up knowing she and her sister were adopted, but instead of giving her a complex, it just reinforced how much her parents loved her. After all, they choose her. They wanted her; she wasnt just something that happened. As such, she got to skip all the normal abandonment baggage that can come with being adopted.

All the baggage Malia currently has is entirely of her own doing. Malia inherited her lycanthropy from her biological parents, but her adoptive parents had no clue they were caring for a little were. As such, during a full moon when she was nine, Malia shifted into her coyote form. While this might have been traumatizing in and of itself, it was greatly complicated by the fact that she was out with her mother and sister in the family car and in the middle of an argument with her mother. Malia now is certain it was over something stupid, but being nine at the time it felt incredibly important and we all know little kids can be brats sometimes. They just usually aren't brats that will tear your throat out. Sure, you can blame it on the coyote instincts and the full moon or the fact that she had no idea what she was doing. None of those explanations erase her profound guilt over their deaths.

Once she realized what she had done (which was weeks after the local sheriff's department has concluded their investigation into the crash), she started maintaining the crash site as a sort of memorial for her mother and sister. She was still a coyote so going back home wasn't really much of an option but more importantly, she didn't want to go back. People were safer if she stayed out in the woods and once she noticed the pattern of being more wild during the full moons, she made a point of always being miles from civilization during that time.

During the next nine years, Malia became the dominant predator in the area and even made a friend of sorts in the form of Ted, a badger. Her life was simple and her needs few. That was until about the time Hale House was restored and Peter Hale began employing vampires. The presence of vampires in the woods forced Malia to realize she was in serious need of some allies, so she went looking for some and found one in Derek Hale. Malia became a reluctant member of the larger pack, but her first and strongest loyalty remains with Derek.

In the course of dealing with Peter and Kate Argent, Malia learned the truth about her heritage; Peter Hale is her father and her mother is a werecoyote. Malia has readily embraced being a part of the Hale family. As for Peter, well, honestly she didn't think much about it or him until her little trip to the future. Confronting the future version of your biological father is pretty weird to begin with, having him tell you to tell his past self that you are his daughter just adds to it. Malia isn't sure what if any relationship will develop with Peter, but if it helps avert that horrible future, she's open to at least trying. However, she's not expecting a father-daughter relationship to magically change the future, so she's more focused on training since forewarned is forearmed.

Over the course of a whirlwind summer and largely thanks to the resident Banshee, Malia managed to get her GED. She's since enrolled at Beacon Hills Community College and while she isn't a great student, she's not failing any classes yet. Truthfully, she's using the college student thing as a way to keep an eye on other pack members; shes learned they are stronger together. She's now living full time at Hale House and Ted is the resident badger.
